§00Check it yourself

Don't take our word for it. Check.

Archis runs on your machine, so you can verify what it does there. Measure it on your own code, see every request the CLI makes, check what you install, and know how to remove it. Each of these takes a minute or less.

§01

Measure it on your own repository

chi measure compiles a file or a directory into what your agent would read through Archis and counts the tokens on both sides. It needs no account and makes no network request of its own.

any repository
$ curl -fsSL https://archis.dev/install.sh | sh
$ chi measure ./src

It prints one row per file, with source tokens, compact tokens, the reduction and how many symbols it found, then a TOTAL line with the overall reduction. Add --json for the full report.

§02

What we measured, and how sure we are

From the 0.49.0 benchmark campaign, 5 Oct 2026. Each row says how it was measured, and the rows that come from another run say which.

  • Tokens in a real agent session−22% in a typical session, −50.6% on tasks both arms solved, −45.3% overallClaude Code, Sonnet 5 (effort high) on prometheus v0.54.1, 1 to 16 files to read per task; 20 paired sessions with and without Archis, on the release after 0.49.0; mean score 0.760 without Archis, 0.974 with it.
  • Where the saving isFrom 10 to 16 files: −52% tokens, with the score up from 0.82 to 0.98; 5 of 6 pairs were cheaper with ArchisUnder 10 files the tokens were about even (−3%) and the gain was in the answers: 0.74 without Archis, 0.97 with it.
  • Index integrity113/113 deterministic; an incremental re-index matched a clean rebuild on 89 of 90113 public repositories, each indexed twice and compared; 90 of them also edited, re-indexed and checked against a rebuild.
  • Symbols and calls found98.6% symbol recall, 97.2% call recallAgainst independent parsers. Symbol recall over 111 repositories in 22 languages, counted only under the same name in the same file; call recall over 114 in 25. Sampled precision, 96.6% over 99, is published as evidence rather than a headline.
  • Indexing speed14.6 s cold, 0.28 s to re-check an unchanged treevscode on one laptop, Archis 0.47.0: the cold index once, the re-check the median of 3 runs. The 0.49.0 timings were taken while the machine was under load, so this row keeps the last clean pass.
  • An earlier run, with a different agent22–43% less per task, 35–62% less input readCodex CLI, gpt-5.5 on prometheus, three cells of the same bench, Archis 0.18.0.

Read the 0.49.0 run record. Its per-repository results, the repositories with their pins and licences, and the method behind each figure are public in terragov/archis-benchmarks, next to each earlier run published there; the harness follows a release or two later. The fastest check is still your own repository, above.

§03

Everything the CLI sends, and when

Indexing, the graph and every answer your agent gets from Archis are computed on your machine. No Archis endpoint accepts source code. These are all the requests the chi and chi-mcp binaries make:

  • archis.dev · /v1/cli-auth/*When: chi auth login, once per machineSends: An install id, the device name, OS and CPU architecture, the CLI version and the device public key.To see or stop it: Only when you sign in.
  • archis.dev · /v1/auth/logoutWhen: chi auth logoutSends: The refresh token and the device id.To see or stop it: Only when you sign out.
  • archis.dev · /v1/cli-auth/machine/leaseWhen: CI and containers, when CHI_TOKEN holds a machine tokenSends: The token, the CLI version, an install id, the machine name, OS and CPU architecture.To see or stop it: Only when you set a machine token.
  • archis.dev · /v1/auth/refresh · /v1/entitlements/refreshWhen: A licensed command, at most every 12 hours, or chi auth refreshSends: The refresh token, the CLI version and the device public key.To see or stop it: chi auth status shows the current lease.
  • archis.dev · /v1/devices/*When: chi devices commands, and chi uninstall --purgeSends: The device id.To see or stop it: Only when you run them.
  • archis.dev · /v1/releases/latestWhen: Once a day, after a command run in a terminalSends: OS, CPU architecture, release channel and the installed version.To see or stop it: Off with CHI_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1. Skipped in CI and when output is not a terminal.
  • the release download hostWhen: chi update, when you run itSends: A plain download of the release archive the signed manifest names.To see or stop it: Only when you update.
  • archis.dev · /v1/telemetry/eventsWhen: Only if you turn telemetry onSends: A random install id, usage counts, the CLI version, OS and architecture. Never paths, symbol names, queries or messages.To see or stop it: Off by default. chi telemetry preview prints the exact payload without sending it.
  • api.github.com · gitlab.com · api.bitbucket.org, or your own Git hostWhen: Free plan: a licensed command in a repository, cached for 7 daysSends: The owner name from the git remote, to check it is a person and not an organization. Never the repository name, a path or any code.To see or stop it: chi license repo shows the owner and how Archis decided.

To watch it for yourself, run the CLI behind a proxy you control, or point it at one with CHI_API_BASE_URL. A firewall like Little Snitch shows the same hosts.

§04

Verify what you install

Read the installer before you run it. It is plain shell, and it refuses an archive whose SHA-256 does not match the release manifest.

read first, then install
$ curl -fsSL https://archis.dev/install.sh | less

Every release publishes checksums.txt and a release manifest signed with Ed25519. chi update checks that signature against the key built into the binary before it replaces anything, and rolls back if the new version fails its health check. To check a download by hand:

manual check
$ curl -fsSLO https://downloads.airsemantics.dev/releases/latest/checksums.txt
$ shasum -a 256 chi-*.tar.gz
# compare with checksums.txt
§05

Leave any time, work offline

Removing Archis takes one command. It removes the index from every repository, the agent setup it added, your credentials, the line the installer added to your shell profile, and the binaries.

remove everything
$ chi uninstall
# --purge also deletes local state

--purge also deletes local state and this device's identity. chi eject removes Archis from one repository and leaves the rest. Neither needs a licence.

Licensed commands keep working without a connection for up to four days: a lease is valid for 24 hours, then a 72-hour grace. Your local data is never deleted when a lease runs out. Enterprise teams on air-gapped networks can use an offline licence file instead.

The Free plan covers repositories you own, on up to two machines, with no card and no time limit. Repositories owned by an organization need a Team workspace, and the first two seats are free.
